The first time my life did a reboot was when I was 7 years old. My mom became ill and I went to live with my father and step-mother and life was never the same again.
In her book, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou said this of her sudden life change at the same age~
“And my seven-year-old world humpty-dumptied, and couldn’t be put back together again.”
When I read this, I had one of the biggest shifts of my transformation and healing process. I realized that the core trauma that controlled everything in my life was this life event – this life reboot that I had never been able to transition through completely and with peace.
It was also the first time I had ever had someone relay to me that they understood what it felt like to have your world completely change at that age. Her trauma was different, but as equally tragic and defining. This quote is the most treasured quote I have in my memory and not one easily shared on a Facebook “pretty box”, because so many just cannot relate.
But, so many can. So many of you are staring over in your life, or have been through life altering events that caused a reboot in everything you thought you knew. From serious illness, to loss of a loved one; a cheating spouse or divorce; loss of a career, home, stability, security; entering a life phase that has left you lost, lonely, or without direction.
Trust me, I get it. If you are starting over it’s because you’ve lost some major part of your life. With that loss comes fear, grief, insecurity, loneliness, depression, and despair.
As a seven-year-old I didn’t have the tools to move through the loss/absence of my mom. It was up to the adults in my life to guide me through that and they didn’t. So, I didn’t get over it – not for a long, long time.
